When you become pregnant, especially if the pregnancy was unexpected, your whole world changes. Suddenly, your body is flooded with hormones that alter you physically as well as emotionally. It can be hard to deal with.
There are three ways a pregnancy ends: an abortion, a miscarriage, or giving birth. Experts estimate that as many as 26% of all pregnancies end in a miscarriage, and most occur within the first 13 weeks.
Because it takes your body time to return to pre-pregnancy hormone levels, you can get a positive pregnancy test even after a miscarriage. How do you find out if your pregnancy is developing or if you’ve miscarried? With ultrasound.

Before Choosing an Abortion
If you’re considering abortion for your pregnancy, make sure you understand the various procedures and limitations, side effects to expect, and any potential physical or emotional risks.
There are two main types of abortion: surgical and medical. Typically, how far along you are in your pregnancy determines the type you qualify for.
The Mayo Clinic says a medical abortion (the abortion pill method) isn’t an option for you for the following reasons:
- You are too far along in your pregnancy. The FDA approves the use of the drugs for the abortion pill method through 10 weeks of pregnancy only. The further along you are in your pregnancy, the less effective the drugs are.
An ultrasound can determine the exact number of weeks and days you have been pregnant. - You have an intrauterine device (IUD) in place.
- You have an ectopic pregnancy. An ectopic pregnancy implants and develops outside the uterus. The uterus is the only place that can hold a growing pregnancy. It becomes extremely dangerous, even life-threatening, if your pregnancy develops somewhere else.
An ultrasound determines the pregnancy’s location. - You have certain medical conditions, such as anemia, a bleeding disorder, and certain heart or blood vessel diseases.
- You take a blood thinner or certain steroid medicines for eczema, arthritis, or asthma.
- You can’t reach a healthcare provider or don’t have access to emergency care.
- You are allergic to the two drugs used.
